Erebia ligea - Arran Brown
Mostly found in and around woodlands, this large and beautiful erebia butterfly is quite majestic when fresh. The chequered fringing and the white mark on the underside differentiate it from all but a few other species.
Named after the finding of a specimen long ago on the Isle of Arran, it is still unknown if the species really ever did fly there.
I find the darkest butterflies are as difficult to photograph as the whites.
