This is a very variable species. The first three images on the left downwards are from specimens photographed in the South of France, lowland regions. Generally it is a very attractive species and one which always makes for a great butterfly photo.

 

The below right butterflies were photographed in Northern England.

The specimen below is of the highest Alpine form, some authors giving it species status as E. merope.

The three others on the left are of the high Alpine form also.
