Hamearis lucina - Duke of Burgundy

This is a rare and generally declining species in the UK, especially in the North where these butterfly photos were taken. There has, however been some success in habitat management, and numbers have recently increased. 

It is a tiny pugnacious butterfly, territorial and an evocation of warm primrose covered spring hillsides.
