Hipparchia hermione - Rock Grayling

Hipparchia-hermione-rock-grayling | PTKbutterflies

These are the only pictures of the species I have, confidently identified by an expert with me at the time. The place was Southern Switzerland, on a warm hillside with sparse mature trees, to the liking of these species.

The open wing image is of a different one found at the roadside, not dead, but definitely not well. It was rescued, but I fear was unlikely to survive the traffic encounter. It does however show the upperside in the butterfly photo, not often seen when settled.
