The relatively large size, greyish brown ground colour and obscure hindwing upperside markings suggest this species. 

I have found it in upland Europe, to be not uncommon, but fast flying, easily spooked, and difficult to follow, hence a lack of quality butterfly images. The one below remains my best up to now, and was taken in the Haute-Savoie in France.
