This generally seems to be a coastal butterfly, with wide variation over large areas of Europe. The top two butterfly photographs on the left were taken in North-Eastern England, the pair below on the North-West coast. 

 

They one below-right is of a Great Orme specimen, ssp. thyone, said to be generally smaller, with a more pale hindwing underside.
