These are frequent acquaintances within the Alps wherever I have visited. The males and females are, like other similar species, quite different, largely through the conspicuous male sex brand on the forewing upperside.
The female is depicted left, and the male in the two butterfly photos below right.
The one immediately below appears omewhat petropolitana (next species) like, but I can see no upperside hindwing transverse band, a differentiating feature of that species.
